How is a Chimney Sweep Performed?

The first thing we do is put on shoe covers. We set down tarps all around the fireplace to protect the house, furniture and flooring. Then we bring in a HEPA rated chimney sweep set vacuum to run the entire time that we are sweeping the chimney. The first thing we do is a preliminary inspection of the fireplace/Chimney system. Once it is OK to proceed, we will go ahead and sweep the Chimney from the floor of the fireplace to the top of the Chimney. Once it is all swept out, if physically possible, we will send a video inspection camera through the system to check the joints and exhaust tiles of the chimney as well as the other interior portions of the fireplace. We also check the mechanical damper to make sure it is functioning properly, as well as any other doors that are in the fireplace. Once the interior is done, we check the exterior of the fireplace/chimney for defects, including the Masonry or siding, the cap whether it is concrete or metal and the condition of the flue cap if applicable. We then clean up everything and move everything out of your house to make sure we left your house is clean as when we got there.

Once everything above is done, we will provide you with a report with photos as applicable. If there are any defects, we would be happy to provide you estimates if you so ask.

There are multiple signs indicating you should schedule a chimney cleaning ASAP, including:

  1. If you notice soot or creosote buildup
  2. If there is a smoke build up while burning wood
  3. Difficulty maintaining fire in fireplace
  4. Strong, unusual odor from a fireplace or chimney
  5. If you think there are birds & other animals in the walls

You should get your chimney cleaned annually to prevent all of the above, but always trust your gut—if you think something is wrong with your fireplace, DO NOT ignore it. Get in touch with Wisconsin Chimney Sweepers to clear it up fast.

Why do chimneys need to be cleaned?

Burning items like wood or coal can create byproducts like creosote or soot in your fireplace. Creosote condenses on the walls of your chimney when hot gasses meet the flue’s colder surface. This condensed material is highly flammable under the right conditions and can easily turn your chimney into a serious fire hazard. Self-cleaning chimney logs claim to remove this buildup, but many burnings will only remove up to 60% of creosote.

What’s in my chimney?

Soot, creosote, and any flammable debris which has accumulated, such as animal nests or leaves. Protect your home from creosote buildup and schedule an appointment with the chimney sweeping & cleaning experts in Wisconsin.
